The Scholars Mentoring Program facilitates one-to-one mentoring relationships that connect scholars with cadet leaders at the Coast Guard Academy to learn, grow, and develop. Mentoring is beneficial to both the mentor and mentee in expanding your networks, fine tuning your leadership capabilities, or getting in-depth support for setting a course for your Coast Guard Academy journey.

Mentoring is a strategic component to our mission of graduating Leaders of Character. It is a core component of our LEAD Strategy: D - deepen understanding through mentoring. Mentoring is also one of the 13 leadership competencies targeted in the cadet journey. Mentoring is defined in the Coast Guard Leadership Development Framework (COMDTINST M5351.3) as:

"Drawing on their experience and knowledge, leaders deliberately assist others in developing themselves, provide objective feedback about leadership and career development, and help identify professional potential, strengths, and areas for improvement. Successful leaders identify with the role of mentor to their staff. They have the skill to advise and develop others in the competencies needed to accomplish current and future goals. Leaders seek out mentors for themselves and may be engaged in the formal Coast Guard mentoring program both as mentors and mentees."

The Commandant has given the Academy a Strategic Imperative to "Leverage best practices to promote mentorship and professional growth through formal programs, integrated research, and cadet experiences to include a formalized mentoring program.”
