The Coast Guard Academy's Core Values Remediation Program facilitates one-to-one mentoring relationships that connect cadets with experienced leaders at the Coast Guard Academy in order to learn, grow, and develop from previously identified Core Value deficiencies. The program enables a cadet who is found in violation of Core Values offenses or the Honor Concept to internalize the values required of a Coast Guard officer and help the cadet identify and correct deficient areas in personal integrity and ethical decision making. A Honor, Respect, or Devotion to Duty mentor is beneficial to the mentee in order to realign personal values with the Coast Guard's Core Values, embrace the Coast Guard Academy's Honor Concept, refine leadership capabilities, and develop into a Leader of Character.
The focus of the Core Values Remediation Program is the redress of character. The program serves to promote reflection and critical thinking, not to indoctrinate. All aspects of the remediation requirements will be guided and submitted through this platform. You will be assigned a detailed connection plan to follow that will cover all aspects and deliverables for this program.
Mentoring is a strategic component to our mission of graduating Leaders of Character. It is a core component of our LEAD Strategy: D - deepen understanding through mentoring. Mentoring is also one of the 13 leadership competencies targeted in the cadet journey. Mentoring is defined in the Coast Guard Leadership Development Framework (COMDTINST M5351.3) as:
"Drawing on their experience and knowledge, leaders deliberately assist others in developing themselves, provide objective feedback about leadership and career development, and help identify professional potential, strengths, and areas for improvement. Successful leaders identify with the role of mentor to their staff. They have the skill to advise and develop others in the competencies needed to accomplish current and future goals. Leaders seek out mentors for themselves and may be engaged in the formal Coast Guard mentoring program both as mentors and mentees."
The Core Values Remediation Program aligns with the Commandant's Strategic Imperative to "Leverage best practices to promote mentorship and professional growth through formal programs, integrated research, and cadet experiences.” The Core Values Remediation Program epitomizes this goal and serves to improve the quality of fleet ready Ensigns the Coast Guard Academy strives to graduate.
